Adelaide, the capital of South
Australia, lies between the pristine coast of Gulf St Vincent and the Mount
Lofty Ranges, with a central business district which is surrounded from all
sides by picturesque parklands, effectively making it a city within a park.
The city centre was originally designed by Colonel William Light in 1836, and consists of a 1 mile square grid of wide streets surrounded by 930 hectares of parklands. This makes most the city not only very easy to navigate around, but also means that all the main attractions of the city are within walking distance. The climate of the city can best be described as Mediterranean, with cool to cold, mild winters and hot, dry summers. This has promoted the cities many clubs, pubs, cafes and restaurants, with many having on street 'al fresco' dining. In fact Adelaide has more cafes per person than any other city in the country.
